2020 / 2021 season - updates and registration!
Submitted By Hornets on Saturday, September 26, 2020
October 1st Update: Click here to download the 2020 House League assessment schedule!

September 26th Update:
Registration is open now and will close on Sep 30th. Please return to RAMP and complete your registration:

These modified hockey season plans are based on the current provincial health guidance and OWHA Return to Hockey plan/protocols (http://owha.on.ca/). Please understand that the modified season and approach may still change as guidance from these authorities evolves.

  • Many of you have asked about the final registration for the season. Thank you for completing the “intent to register” earlier this summer to support us in planning this season!
  • Registration is open from Sep 26th until Sep 30th for all rep and HL players.
  • We have sent an email directly from the RAMP registration platform to those of you who have used it already to complete your “intent to register”.
  • The Registration fee is $480 through December for all players other than U18 House League who will pay $360 as they only skate once a week.
  • Instalment / refund policy:
    • First $240 payment non refundable once the season has started (which it has for rep).
    • $65 admin fee will be charged if the season is cancelled before it starts (only applicable to HL).
    • Second $240 payment will not be collected if the season is cancelled before Nov 1.
    • No refunds after Nov 2.
    • No refunds for voluntary withdrawals.
    • No refunds or credits provided to cohorts/bubbles/teams that are shut down for a period due to COVID-19.
    • Any applicable refunds will be processed by cheque and mailed to recipients.

House League updates:

  • Please note that we require more House League coaches and goalies than in a normal season due to the limited size of the teams and divisions.
    • Please consider applying as a House League coach if you have not already done so: https://oakvillehornets.com/Forms/1078/
    • We especially need coaches for the following age groups: U7 (Tyke), U9 (Novice), U11 (Atom) and U13 (Peewee).
  • There will be NO late registrations due to COVID-19 protocols (limited team sizes, etc).
  • Detailed COVID-19 protocols will be shared prior to the assessment skates. Please come to the rink fully dressed for U11 and below / dressed except for skates/gloves/helmet for U13 and above.
  • Assessment skates are planned for the weekend of October 3rd and 4th. These assessment skates will give the players a chance to shake off some rust and allow our house league coaches to assess players so that balanced teams can be created. Assessments will be split alphabetically by last name, detailed times will be posted after registration closes. Expected time windows per age group for assessment skates and (tentatively) for the regular season:
    • Saturday, October 3rd:
      • U7 (former Tyke):      7:00-9:20 (Joshua’s Creek Red)
      • U9 (former Novice):    9:20-14:00 (Joshua’s Creek Red)
      • U11 (former Atom):      7:30-12:10 (Joshua’s Creek Blue)
      • U13 (former Peewee): 13:20-16:50  (Joshua's Creek Blue)
        UPDATED times/location!!!
      • U15 (former Bantam): 14:00-18:40  (Joshua's Creek Red)
        UPDATED times/location!!!
    • Sunday, October 4th:
      • U7 (former Tyke):        11:40-14:00 (Joshua’s Creek Red)
      • U9 (former Novice):    7:00-11:40 (Joshua’s Creek Red)
      • U11 (former Atom):      7:30-12:10 (Joshua’s Creek Blue)
      • U13 (former Peewee): 13:20-16:50 (Joshua’s Creek Blue)
        UPDATED times/location!!!
      • U15 (former Bantam): 14:00-18:00 (Joshua’s Creek Blue OR Red)
      • U18/U22 (former Midget):   17:30-22:00 (Joshua’s Creek Red)
  • Please see Hockey Canada's age division chart for 2020/2021 for detailed info on birth years, etc.
  • The initial house league season will be a 12 week season from October 3 to December 20, 2020.  Each week, teams (other than U18 - formerly Midget) will practice once a week and and play a 4 on 4 game.
  • Players/Families will be invited to their teams via TeamSnap after the assessment skates and teams will have their first practices together on the October 10-11 weekend.  Games will begin on the weekend of October 17-18.  Our intention is for all teams (other than U18/Midget) to practice on Saturday and play games on Sunday. As in prior years U18 will only play games once a week.
  • Teams will consist of 11 skaters and one goalie.
  • Two teams will be on the ice together for shared practices.
  • No more than 4 teams will be placed in a division for 4on4 game play.
  • New this season, all players will be issued both a home and away jersey for games.
  • We aim to offer a winter season beginning in January if permitted and will advise as soon as we can if this will occur.
 Rep Division:
  • Rep coaches at each age level have collaborated to create their teams and players/families are being invited to their TeamSnap teams.
  • Practices have begun the week of Sep 7th. 4 on 4 games within the public health unit are expected to begin in October.
  • Each Rep team will practice together and will be split into two groups of up to 11 skaters and 1 goalie for game play.
  • Coaches will communicate rep assessment instalments based on their budgets, primarily driven by ice cost.
  • Rep apparel – the Hornets expect their rep teams (and House league teams when at tournaments) to represent Oakville and the Hornets well. Typically this includes apparel packages for when players arrive at the arenas. With facility restrictions on dressing room use we expect that players will be required to arrive to their practices and games (once permitted) dressed in their hockey equipment. As such there will be limited opportunity to represent the Oakville Hornets as we have in prior seasons. However, we still want our players to show their Hornets pride around town and at school and hopefully at the rinks if permitted and have worked with Corbetts to offer apparel items this season. The Hornets have provided rep coaches minimum apparel requirements and encourage players to continue using existing apparel if it will fit throughout the season. Please note that this does not apply to rep jerseys. We need to have a consistent look on the ice and ensure that potential number conflicts are resolved - unfortunately this may mean having to order new jerseys in some cases. Coaches will resolve number conflicts where they exist. HPP teams have already been communicated their apparel requirements and are not affected by this guidance.

Applicable to both House League and Rep:

  • Hockey for January and beyond will be communicated at a later point.
  • Please remember and strictly adhere to public health guidance for social distancing, hand hygiene, mask usage and all other requirements (especially all facility specific requirements). This is paramount to protect vulnerable players, staff and family members. Disregarding public health related guidance will lead to consequences up to the exclusion from Hornets programming during the pandemic. Despite the best efforts of all our volunteers, the Hornets cannot guarantee the safety of our members and their families so the ultimate decision to assume any risks related to COVID lies with each family.
  • We will continue to provide the association wide TeamSnap premium functionality to all Hornets teams. No TeamSnap teams outside the association umbrella will be permitted as attendance (TeamSnap availability) and the new Health Check feature will be used to ensure we’re compliant with public health requirements for tracking and tracing as well as limiting participation to those who are not exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Spectator / parent access will be limited to 1 (one) per player at most facilities. Team coaches / managers will provide information on facility related protocol (arrival/departure times/come dressed/use of change rooms/etc) depending on which facilities are used.
The facility protocols are also posted in our Health Services library: https://oakvillehornets.com/Libraries/2956/Health_Services/
  • Tournaments or DS teams are not permitted in the 2020-21 season.
  • Please note that programming may still change based on public health guidance. We hope for positive developments eventually allowing for regular 5on5 play and increased roster sizes but must brace for renewed restrictions and possible orders to limit or cease game play.

Expected 4 on 4 Game Format:

  • OWHA September 25th - Modified Playing Rules
  • Registered families will be informed of any changes as soon as the OWHA determines that the requirements for each stage are reached.
  • 5on5 game play may only resume once stage 4 is reached.
Public Health considerations will be a major influence on our programming this season. The Hornets board has decided to name Victoria Cosway as our Health Services Officer ([email protected]) to ensure that we are following best practices as communicated by the OWHA, province and town. Please join us in welcoming her on board! Victoria has extensive experience in this area and is working with schools and other organisations on their plans. Please note that Victoria will be focusing on all Health Services relevant aspects including concussion awareness, not just on those relating to the current pandemic. More information can be found here:

Our rep teams have been back on the ice for a bit - welcome, it’s great to have you back on home ice. For our House League players: We look forward to seeing everyone back on the ice soon!

President of the Oakville Hornets
