Hornets’ Shift from on the Bench to Behind the Bench
Submitted By Hornets on Thursday, June 10, 2021
The Oakville Girls Hockey Association would like to share our appreciation for U18 A Hornets who assumed coaching positions with our U9 and U11 house league teams. Despite their demanding schedules, which included their commitments to the U18 A team, school and part-time jobs, this incredible group of young women dedicated their time to the development of our younger Hornets.

U9 – Jenni Randell, Olivia Hledin, Emma Thom

U9 – Katie Stone, Selena Monardo, Jessica Haylock

U9 – Jameson Brown, Jayden Petrelli

U11 – Charlotte Guay, Shannon O’Hare, Brooke McIntyre

U11 – Rachel Marriot, Katie Panizza, Emily Sampson

U11 – Leena Tawfik, Casey Fleming, Paige Prestidge

The program provided an opportunity for the members of the U18 A Hornets to develop their own coaching expertise while acting as a strong female role model for our young Hornets. The Hornets will continue to foster and develop this initiative with a view to seeing these future leaders and coaches return behind the bench after university.

The assistant coach of the U18 A Hornets, Nicole Turczyniak, organized and guided this young group of coaches through their successful season. Nicole had the following to say about the program,

“I have had the pleasure of getting to know these young coaches for the past 2 years from being a part of the coaching staff for the U18 A Sampson team. I am so proud of all of them for their hard work and dedication to this sport. They all displayed high levels of commitment, enthusiasm and leadership as coaches while managing many other responsibilities in their lives including school, work, and attending our team practices and scrimmages. These coaches made a significant impact on the lives of their players since they were viewed as role models and mentors for our younger Hornets and made this an enjoyable hockey season. I wish them all the best of luck with their future endeavours and hope to see them come back and coach after they graduate university/college!”  – Nicole Turczyniak, U18 A Sampson assistant coach

This incredible group of young coaches created a positive and dynamic environment full of encouragement and guidance to develop the proper skills in our younger Hornets. The OGHC wishes these graduates the best of luck in their future endeavors and we hope to see you behind the bench again one day. You’re always welcome back, once a Hornet always a Hornet.
